Who needs a doula?
Any family can hire a doula for their birth. A doula helps new parents-to-be navigate the numerous childbirth practices in place and know what their choices are.
A family wanting a safe, healthy birth can hire a doula to make sure the birthing mother is educated on labor and pushing positions--and to help her use them--to ensure an open pelvis for her baby to descend.
A family preparing for a cesarean birth can hire a doula to provide them with resources for breastfeeding, bonding, and a family-centered birth, to counter or avoid altogether any challenges or separation following surgery.
A single or young mother can rely on a doula to support her choices, be her consultant and birth partner, and show her all the wonderful things about her birthing body that she may not hear elsewhere.
Just as some people hire a wedding planner for their big event, a tour guide to show them around, or a lawyer to represent them in court, a doula is the most knowledgeable and experienced person at your birth who doesn't work for anyone but you.
What do I do?
I meet with you for bi-monthly prenatal appointments from the time you hire me, during which we dig in to cover health history, expectations, coping techniques, birth options, birth plan, partner involvement, postpartum arrangements, break-glass scenarios, and any other issues that arise, affecting your pregnancy.
I help you locate a provider, childbirth class, lactation educator and/or consultant, chiropractor, acupuncturist, new baby care class, or postpartum assistance, as needed.
I lead you in a Labor Whispering session to help bring release & focus to your upcoming birth.
I go on call at 38 weeks and remain available until you give birth.
I bring everything I have to help you emotionally and physically achieve a birth you will cherish, and I stay until you feel well-cared for and settled after giving birth. I help initiate breastfeeding & leave you with an easy-access list of referrals, should you need them in the first few days.
I follow up with two postpartum visits: one to provide immediate care & support, and one at a later date to assess your birth experience, postpartum adjustment, and any concerns you have or further resources you may need.
"I have roots stretched in the earth
growing stronger since my birth
you'll never touch them, for you see
they are the deepest part of me."
